91 More Pounds of Tomatoes

If you are getting tired of all my tomato posts, be assured I am going to be pretty weary of tomatoes pretty soon, too. Yesterday after the Farmers Market I came home and made and froze a huge pot of spaghetti sauce with with the last half of Thursday's 60lb. harvest.

Then, Sara and I went out to pick tomatoes and lugged in all these lovely 'matoes --which weighed out to be 91 lb. 8 oz. Today I am multi-tasking--roasting and freezing some, canning tomatoes and sauce and maybe salsa, and drying some in the food dehydrator. I have to keep at it and not lose ground--I guesstimate another 400-500 pounds out in the garden will be ripening over the next couple weeks.

so, here's my favorite -- "I'm tired of canning tomatoes" solution --- feed them to the chickens!!!! The birds need veggies too!!!!

Holy cow! That's a TON of tomatoes! Did you have any luck at market with them?

Oh, and one more question. The white container of tomatoes in the middle of the picture...what are those huge red ones? Those are gorgeous!

WOW! I wish I lived closer -- I'd beg a few pounds. :) I have a gazillion preserve (relishes and chutneys) recipes I'd love to try. You surely had a bumper crop -- I'm hoping the three pathetic plants I have on the balcony will ripen...we might have enough for salad. :-/ Ah well, next year...

Liz: This is the first time I have ever grown more than 6 tomato plants, when I tucked them into my town flower garden. This year I started 6 varieties from seed, all of which germinated well, and we planted 98 plants. We didn't really have a clue what that would yield, but my daughters assured me we'd need them to be self-sufficient and especially if we pursued out pizza farm idea.
Marie: The chickens are getting tons of veggies - all the trimmings and any tomaotes that aren't nearly perfect. The turkeys and pigs love them, too.
Katiegirl: We sold quite a few of our most spectacular heirloom tomatoes (and the Noir des Carmes muskmelons ) at market, plus those tomato tarts. But of course ALL the veggie vendors have tomatoes galore right now. Those huge red tomatoes are the Brandywine, I believe.
Nancy: I'd happily share my tomatoes with you! Do you have a favorite relish or chutney recipe you would be willing to share with me?
