Unexpected Visitors

Last weekend our friend/neighbor Dawn dropped by  up with her darling daughter, Maddie, and two other darling kids--the offspring of one of her nubian goats.
Dawn's nubian doe had been bred but  gave no signs of being pregnant  and  passed her estimated due date by almost two  weeks.  (Cadence holds the female baby.)
Dawn was disappointed  but resigned to the fact that the  breeding didn't take --and was totally surprised to walk into the barn that morning and find these kids!  (A third kid was stillborn.)  We were smitten by the gangly goat kids -Sara with the two kids.
Here is Dawn's daughter Maddie, with the male kid.  The mother goat hadn't yet nursed her babies, so Dawn got some  fresh cow's milk from us to bottle feed them. Happily, since then mom's maternal instinct has kicked in and Dawn won't have to bottle-feed the kids..
Dawn makes yummy goats-milk cheeses and lovely soaps...maybe we will have to contemplate  acquiring a goat....
Later in the afternoon, Rog and I discovered a beautiful painted turtle crossing the gravel road in front of our farm. We didn't think we had enough  wetlands around our farm to provide turtle habitat!  After admiring him/her for a while, we let him/her go in the swampy ditch to which s/he seemed to be headed.

Fascinating for a mother goat going through life and hiding her pregnancy. Lovely little kids

They are adorable! Always liked goats, fascinating creatures. Now if you could only stop them from eating everything :-)
