Chick Lit

Like many of my fellow garden bloggers, I have begun receiving seed catalogs and spending hours drooling over them.

What's perhaps even more exciting than a seed catalog? A Chicken catalog!

Until a few weeks ago I didn't even know such a catalog existed...Soon I will be ordering chicks through the mail.
So many fantabulous fowl! How will I ever decide what kind of chickens are Squash Blossom Farm chickens? All I know so far is that I am looking for egg-laying, garden-bug-eating, hardy, calm, friendly chickens which are also beautiful. And I am fond of fluffy leg feathers.

I am no expert, but I do have a chicken-owning fantasy so have looked into it a bit. If you don't mind small eggs, I have heard that bantam cochins are lovely and can be like pets in terms of temperament. http://www.cacklehatchery.com/cochinbantam.html Is that a Territorial seed catalog I spied in the background? I love their seeds!

Hi, how very exciting! I wish I could browse through that catalogue, do you have a link?

Take care and good luck with the chicks./ Tyra

Oops, I should have included the chicken hatchery link: http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/
Another great hatchery site is Welp, located closer to me in Iowa: http://www.welphatchery.com/ - I am eagerly awaiting their catalog. Both websites have great pictures of the puoltry varieties and information about them , but it's much more fun to curl up on the sofa with the catalogs.

I am tempted by bantam chickens (being smaller, I would have room for more, right?), but being a big dog person, I suspect I might be a big chicken person, too!

Hi. I used to have chickens. Rhode Island Red is a very reliable layer. Brown eggs, very nice. My 2 cents.

I like your spin on Chic lit !!
