Tomato Tasting
Saturday we went to Seed Savers Exchange near Decorah, Iowa, for their annual Tomato Tasting event. We got to taste 40 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, make notes for next year's crop, and vote for our favorite. All the tomato seeds were half price for the day- so I purchased packets of my favorites from the tasting event: Moonglow, Kelloggs Breakfast, Opalka, Cherokee purple, and Red Zebra.
Our friends Jim and Carla invited us to the tomato tasting event. Last year, Jim and Carla purchased a beautiful small acreage near Chatfield and are gardening and raising a few chickens. (Unbeknownst to us, it was Jim's birthday. We celebrated afterward by having dinner together at The Quarter Quarter, a great little restaurant in Harmony, MN.)
We enjoyed walking through eclectic the gardens at Seedsavers, all planted with heirloom varieties of vegetables and flowers. They also raise a few heritage breeds of chickens and turkeys there, as well as White Park Cattle, a rare heritage breed. I was especially eager to see the White Park cattle, as that is the breed of sire we chose for LaFonda's calf. The white park cattle are quite lovely - her calf will be beautiful!

An organized heirloom tomato tasting event sounds absolutely wonderful. Thanks for letting us know about your favorites. I've heard lots of good things about Kellogg's Breakfast and Cherokee purple. I'm not familiar with the other names, but I'll note them for next time when I'm looking for tomato seeds. I hope they grow well for you next year!
